Using Cover Crops to Suppress Weeds and Improve Soil Health

چکیده
Herbicide-resistant weeds are creating challenges for producers to control in crop fields. This study explores the potential of cover crops reduce weed pressure and improve soil health. Cover were planted after corn harvest tilled no-till fields, included Graza radish, winter wheat, annual ryegrass, spring oats, forage collards. The was fallow with herbicide application but no crop. Soil health determined prior termination. radish collards did not grow consistently all plots due poor germination kill. Significant biomass produced plot or stands. Microbial much greater field than

Herbicide Resistant Weeds and Crops
Modern herbicidal weed control often exploits physiological differences among plants and takes advantage of herbicide tolerance or resistance in crop plants to bring about the selective removal of susceptible weeds. The Weed Science Society of America defines herbicide tolerance as “the inherent ability of a plant to survive and reproduce after herbicide treatment” which suggests that herbicide...

متن کاملDifferential Soil Acidity Tolerance of Tropical Legume Cover Crops
In tropical regions, soil acidity and low soil fertility are the most important yield-limiting factors for sustainable crop production. Using legume cover crops as mulch is an important strategy not only to protect the soil loss from erosion but also to ameliorate soil fertility. Information is limited regarding tolerances of tropical legume cover crops to acid soils. A greenhouse experiment wa...

Wang, Q., Y. Li, Z. Handoo, and W. Klassen. 2007. Influence of cover crops on populations of soil nematodes. Nematropica 37:79-92. A pot experiment was carried out in south Florida to elucidate suppressive or antagonistic effects of several cover crops grown in rotation on soil nematode populations. The crops were two marigolds, Tagetes patula L. ‘Dwarf Double French Mix’ (MDF), and Tagetes pat...
متن کاملEffects of film mulch and soil pesticides on nematodes, weeds, and yields of vegetable crops.
Field plots in Tifton loamy sand were treated with various soil pesticides in 1973 and 1974 and either left exposed or covered with biodegradable flint mulch. Test crops were cantaloup, slicing and pickling cucumber, squash, and sweet corn. Overhead sprinkler irrigation was used in 1973, and trickle irrigation under the film mulch was used on sweet corn in 1974. Soil was assayed for nematodes, ...
